The Alexanderplatz in Berlin everyone knows is not only one of the vastest and largest squares throughout Europe, but also used to be a major traffic junction of the former East Berlin since the opening of the S-Bahn at the end of the 19th century as well as that of the U-Bahn in 1913. In addition, it was a main shopping center of Berlin's eastern parts.
Before that time, it was used for military exercises and as market for cattle trade. The name Alexanderplatz is due to a visit of Tsar Alexander I. in the year 1805. |
