Berlin Monuments: Brandenburg Gate

The Brandenburg Gate is one of the most important and famous landmarks of Berlin everyone knows from photographs.

Until the reunification, it used to be symbol for the separation of not only Berlin, but also Germany, in two parts. Since the fall of the wall in 1989, it has been a symbol of reunification.

The monument of neoclassical style was built between 1788 and 1791 because King Friedrich Wilhelm III ordered the construction of a gate as termination of the street "Unter den Linden". Three years after its completion, the "Quadriga" was put on top of the gate.

Unfortunately, the Brandenburg Gate was seriously destroyed in the Second World War. The Gate as well as the Quadriga, however, not only suffered from the War and had to be restored several times.
