Berlin Places: Government Quarter

Since the government of Germany moved to Berlin in 1999, the "Regierungsviertel" of Berlin has been a major place of political attention and interest. In addition, it also has become quite a famous attraction for tourists, with its highlight being the glass dome - and viewpoint - of the "Reichstag".

As the German Parliament had no real seat but met in various buildings along Leipziger Strasse, the construction of one building to become the seat of the "Reichstag" was decided. However, it took quite a while until the works started in 1884. Ten years later, in 1894, the new building was opened and the Reichstag came together here until it burnt down in 1933. The reasons for this fire still are a controversial subject.

During the Nazi Regime, the building was not used for meetings of the "Reichstag" any more. Instead, the occasional meetings were carried out in the opera house opposite the Reichstag building that was used for military exercises and propaganda by the Nazis.
