As Wilhelm II wanted to have a church to remind of his grandfather Wilhelm I, he ordered the construction of a church at Breitscheidplatz near Kurfürstendamm.
Between 1891 and 1895, the enormous "Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche" ("Emperor Wilhelm Memorial Church") was built in Romanesque style according to plans of the architect Franz Schwechten.
During the Second World War, the church was seriously destroyed by bombs. However, the "Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche" was not reconstructed but the ruins were left as they were. Next to it, a new church was built between 1951 and 1961.
Now, both churches have the purpose of reminding people of the horrors of war.
