Checkpoint Charlie used to be one of the major crossings between East and West Berlin for allies, foreigners as well as diplomats where people were checked when they wanted to cross the border.
The "Haus am Checkpoint Charlie" was opened in 1964 by Rainer Hildebrandt. Right next to the border, it used to be an important place for refugees as well as helpers. For example, escapes were planned and carried out from here.
In the "Mauermuseum" at Checkpoint Charlie there are not only displayed the original guardhouse as well as the famous sign at the border. The quite stuffed museum of course deals with the history of the Berlin Wall and tells stories of people who escaped. |
