Built between 1220 and 1230, the Church St. Nikolai (Nikolaikirche) in the historic "Nikolaiviertel" is Berlin's oldest church.
Still in the 13th century, the former basilica was reconstructed to become a Gothic hall church.
At the end of the 19th century, the single-towered church received a second tower according to plans of August Stühler.
Until about that time as well, St. Nikolai used to be a major part of Berlin's skyline.
Due to the severe destructions of the Second World War, St. Nikolai was rebuilt in the 1980s using the original plans.
Now, the church houses a museum dealing with the history of the church as well as involved persons. Due to its great acoustics, it is also used for concerts.
When you visit St. Nikolai, you should not miss listening to the "Glockenspiel" with more than 40 bells.
