Berlin Transport

As Berlin is so huge, it is obviously no good idea to do your sightseeing tour on foot. The public transport system, however, it quite developed and includes trains, S-Bahn, U-Bahn (subway trains), buses and in the former east of Berlin even trams.

Berlin has two airports, Tegel and Schönefeld. The ultra-modern main station that is Berlin's first central train station was opened in 2006 near the governement quarter. Here, not only trains to national and international destinations arrive and depart, but also U-Bahn and S-Bahn.

  Berlin Hauptbahnhof
As the S-Bahn and U-Bahn network is quite well-developed and extensive with regular trains, this is probably the easiest way of getting around. In addition, the system is not very complicated.

It is recommendable, however, to get a map of the network from one of the information centers. If this is not possible, there are maps at each station as well, mostly near the ticket machines.

Tickets

For trams and buses, it is possible to buy your ticket either before from a ticket machine or office, but also at the ticket machine in the tram or from the bus driver. This is not possible for U-Bahn and S-Bahn. There, you have to buy it before at a ticket machine or office and validate it before you start your trip.

U-Bahn

The most convenient as well as the quickest way to get around Berlin is probably the U-Bahn. The U-Bahn network covers the entire area of the capital of Germany. Trains leave regularly and the train times are quite reliable.
